Being that this is not the normal engine found on these airplanes I have added a specs below that details the engine and the performance I see in it. Also have a trailer that can go with sale and willing to deliver within 500 miles for expenses. This is an airworthy airplane and can be flown home should you choose.

The VolksWagon powered kitfox...
This airplane is powered by a Great Plaines Direct drive 2180cc VW and has a 62x26 Culver prop
installed. The airplane was built by my dad and at the time he didn’t trust 2 stroke power and at the
time the Rotax 912 was in its infancy and he didn’t trust it either. He wanted 4 stroke power and the VW
seemed like a reasonable choice. Giving the better access to information we have today I am guessing
that he would have made a different choice now but at the time it was the best option he could see.
This all being said the VW is not the optimal combination for one simple reason... You can’t swing a large
enough prop on the direct drive engine. 62” is as large as you can run. It is not a weight issue this
airplane weighs only a bit more than a lot of 582 powered kitfox’s and Avids. empty and the CG is in the
dead middle of the range. There is also a stigma about VW engines running hot. This is also not the case
it took some time and a bit of redesign to the baffles, cowling, and oil cooler but now this engine runs a
bit on the cool side even in the dead of summer. I have to tape off part of the oil cooler to get the oil
temp up into normal ranges even during the summer.
Performance... This airplane is not a super performer. I would equate its performance to that of a 65HP
J-3 Cub. Where the airplane is based is about 1000’ above sea level and on a hot day the airplane is
flying in around 500’ and climbs out around 500 fpm single passenger. On a cold day climb it will do
around 700 fpm. I have put the majority of the time on the airplane and have operated it off airport to
the extent we can here in my area and never once had the performance scare me with the shortest strip
we operate into being 1400’ long.
Although this is not the optimal power combination for the airplane, it is airworthy and is not
dangerously underpowered its just simply not optimal. This would be a great airplane for someone who
likes to tinker and just wants to go out and buzz around in the afternoons or it is a great starting point
for someone who wants to upgrade.
